Advanced Standing Transfer Students

A limited number of advanced-standing places may be available each year. Interested students should submit a request to medschool@uab.edu.

Applications are available beginning October 1, and the deadline for submitting applications is March 1. Students wishing to transfer into the third year must submit their scores from Step I of the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Letters of support from your school of medicine dean and two faculty members are required.

The evaluation of advanced-standing applications begins no later than April 1 of each year. Interviews may be scheduled at any mutually convenient time after the basic application materials have been received.

Strict preference in selecting individuals for advanced standing is given to students who are legal residents of Alabama and U.S. citizens in LCME-accredited allopathic medical schools. Students who have attended foreign medical schools, osteopathic schools, schools of podiatry, chiropractic schools, and dental schools are not considered for transfer.

Positions that become available are limited to attrition. Students who are admitted into the third-year class are generally placed at one of the School of Medicine's branch campuses in Huntsville or Tuscaloosa.

Only students who have compelling reasons to transfer are considered for advanced standing. Consideration will not be given to students who have failed to keep pace with their medical class or who have any kind of academic judgment against them (e.g., on probation for honor code violation).
