The Division of Student Health Services (SHS) is housed within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Faculty and staff of the division are responsible for the health care of graduate, professional and international students at UAB. All full-time students in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Optometry, Nursing, Health-Related Professions, all international students, and many graduate students are required to subscribe to the Student Health Plan. All other students are strongly urged to subscribe to this plan, but their subscription is optional.

SHS clinicians (both male and female faculty/nurse practitioners) provide primary care, including physical exams and immunizations, to UAB students. The SHS Clinic is located at 930 South 230 Street in the Community Health Services Building – 20th Street. Office hou rs are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays. In case of an AFTER-HOUR EMERGENCY, a 24-hour telephone service is available by calling the emergency paging number at 934-3411. Ask for the Student Health physician/nurse practitioner on call.

In addition, SHS maintains a 24-hour on-line communication tool for UAB students that allows easier and more convenient access to non-emergency healthcare. UAB students can get personalized answers to health questions from SHS staff, prescriptions refilled, or appointment requests honored. This system provides total confidentiality, security and HIPPA compliance.
