  1. Monthly meetings: Look forward to having monthly meetings again. Let’s aim for the first Thursday of every month at noon. We will use the same room on the third floor if it is still available.
  2. Senate: The Senate officers for the upcoming year will be:

                       President: Manisha Sharma

                      VP: John Simmons

                     Secretary: Bhavik Patel

The secretary needs to keep attendance as well as other general records. The “minutes” of the meetings need to be posted on the senate website without delay.

  1. Community Service suggestions: We as medical students should partake in local community projects. Other schools already have programs set up, but more importantly, we should do it for the betterment of our professional development. It will also allow many of us to have exposure to different kinds of people, which is what we will see in our practice (Kierstin Cates).  It will probably be a good idea to already have a chosen project (like Habitat for Humanity) for the incoming freshman to facilitate an easier transition/adjustment.  The third year class will keep the Ronald McDonald House as their project.  The fourth years can choose their projects every year that can fit their schedules.  Another suggestion is that we assign the class representatives to be in charge of coordinating these.
  2. Communication: Be sure that there is a good stream of communication between the classes, especially between the 1st and 2nd year classes. They are more than welcome to set up their own extra meetings.
  3. Budget: A lot was spent this past year on the Ball.  Discussed changing the amount allocated for Grants.  No vote was taken
  4. Retreat: We need to decide on when to have a retreat. Look for more information this summer and early into the upcoming academic year.
  5. Medical Survival Week (MSW): Kierstin and Dr. Smith tried out this idea for the first time this year with the class of 2007. We should try to implement this project at the end of every semester. Basically, this year the MSW consisted of stress-relieving activities such as: dodge-ball, yoga, movie night, free lunch, community activity info., various speakers, etc.
  6. Class of 2007 Elections: First-year committee needs to address the issue of non-B’ham campus (3rd and 4th years) people ended up voting for a B’ham rep.
