The Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program at UAB provides comprehensive training in all disciplines of the specialty. Three applicants are appointed each year for four years of training which commence following a year of General Surgery internship in the UAB Department of Surgery. Each year the residents rotate among four different hospitals and many different services: the University Hospital Head and Neck service; University Hospital General/Rhinology service; University Hospital Otology/Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery service; VA Medical Center service; the Children's Hospital service; and the Cooper Green Hospital service.
The program encompasses a wide variety and large volume of clinical and operative experience in cancer surgery of the head and neck, endocrine surgery, otologic/neurotologic surgery, facial trauma, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, general otolaryngology, and rhinology, including state of the art endoscopic sinus surgery. Annually the Division performs over 2,000 surgical procedures and cares for over 10,000 patients in the multiple clinics. Chief residents routinely finish their training with over 1,500 cases. The sub-specialty areas are all staffed by fellowship trained faculty members, and residents have extensive exposure to all aspects of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
In addition to a broad clinical and surgical experience, the residency program fosters training in the basic sciences and research. Specialized instruction occurs in weekly conferences, including talks given by visiting faculty and faculty from other related specialties. Residents participate in a monthly Journal Club with an emphasis on current topics in ENT. Each year all of the residents present the results of ongoing research activities at Resident's Research Day, and they spend a four month block on a research rotation during their PGY-4 year. Attendance at local and national Otolaryngology conferences is encouraged and supported whenthe residents are making presentations. Other academic endeavors include a yearly temporal bone course, yearly fresh cadaver dissection courses in both endoscopic sinus surgery and facial plastic surgery, a soft tissue course, a fracture plating course, and a multi-disciplinary course on cosmetic facial surgery.
The Otolaryngology Residency at UAB enjoys state of the art facilities including a 12 station, fully-equipped temporal bone and sinus lab, expanding operating facilities, and a beautiful outpatient clinic and same-day surgery facility - The Kirklin Clinic. Residents are exposed to and instructed in the use of the latest in instrumentation used in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery today.
Overall, the Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program at UAB provides residents with training in the basic sciences as they apply to the head and neck, communication sciences including speech pathology, audiology and rehabilitative procedures, endocrine disorders, and major disciplines of ENT. Residents who complete their training here will have had extensive surgical, clinical and academic training in every aspect of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and will be comfortable and competent in performing the duties of excellent Otolaryngologists.
