| Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that involves the process of restoring lost abilities for a person who has been impaired by disease, disorder, or injury. Using a multidisciplinary approach, PM&R is a patient-centered, interdisciplinary treatment approach to patient care. Patient care teams include physiatrists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation professionals and other health care professionals from all areas of the UAB Health System as needed. These efforts result in a comprehensive care plan that coordinates treatment to meet each patient’s individual needs to restore maximum function and quality of life for the patient - at home, in the workplace, and in the community.
