Volunteer Opportunities!

NAP is looking for volunteers to assist Dr. Kathy Monroe (NAP Faculty Advisor and peds ED physician) with a Teen Driving Safety Day at Brookwood Mall on Saturday, May 1st, from Noon to 3:00P.  Volunteers will work alongside Dr. Monroe, Dr. Michele Nichols (also a peds ED physician), and a pediatric resident, to assist in administering survey questions to teens and parents, and giving out material on the topic.  If anyone is interested in helping out, please send an email to Dr. Monroe at KMonroe@peds.uab.edu.  This should be a fun opportunity to work with pediatric faculty and participate in their research activities!

Children’s Center for Weight Management is putting on a weight management overnight camp, for kids 10-14 who are established patients of CCWM.  The event will be held June 21 - 26, 2010 at the YMCA at Hargis.

CCWM is looking for two male counselors 19 or older that would be interested in volunteering for the week.  A $200 gift will be provided for their help at the end of the week.  Medical students or others considering medical school with an interest in this area would benefit greatly from this experience as they will be in contact with the patients as well as clinicians who have specialized in treating overweight youth.

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Chris Thomason; his information is below.  Mr. Thomason will be conducting the initial interview as a volunteer service for the clinic.

Nuts About Peds  is a group that allows students interested in the practice of pediatrics to hear physicians in the field speak about different issues they face and why they chose peds. NAP also sponsors a mentor program with faculty at the Children's Hospital of Alabama that allows students to work alongside a trained pediatrician. In addition, we collaborate with other interest groups in volunteer opportunities related to pediatrics and the well-being of children.

More about Pediatrics

DESCRIPTION

Pediatrics is primarily concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Concerned with more than just the physical well-being, pediatricians are involved with the prevention, early detection, and management of behavioral, developmental, and functional social problems that affect their patients.  Pediatricians can be active at the community level by helping to prevent or solve problems in child health care and be a public advocate for children's causes. People in this specialty tend to rate the following values high: creativity, sufficient time off, variety, and working with people.  The length of training is usually 3 years.
