Welcome to the web page for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham. A wide range of surgical procedures involving the heart and thoracic area are performed through the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery. It performs about 2,000 open heart procedures each year and has performed about 30,000 such operations since 1966. A one-to-one patient nurse ratio is maintained for pediatric, cardiac transplantation, and intra-aortic balloon patients, and a one-to-two nurse-patient ratio for all other CICU patients.

Surgical services include:
  • coronary artery disease

  • valvular heart disease

  • congential heart disease

  • acute and chronic diseases of the thoracic aorta

  • all kinds of pulmonary disease

  • esophageal disease

  • disease of the mediastinum pleura, chest wall and diaphragm

  • end stage heart disease through organ transplant and pacemaker implantation.
