Application FAQ                                                                            

Does your program offer positions outside the Match? 
Our Program evaluates every applicant's application and determines if a pre-match position will be offered.  

Does your program consider a minimal cut-off score for USMLE exams?
Yes. Completion of the USMLE steps 1, with a minimum score of 80, on first attempt or the FLEX 1 & 2

Must IMG's be certified by the ECFMG to apply to your program? 
No, not to apply to our program, but ECFMG Certification must be verified by time of Match Day. 

Is Prior US clinical training required for IMG's? 
No. U.S. clinical experience strengthens the application, but is not a mandatory item for acceptance. 

Does your program sponsor H-1B Visas? 
Yes. UAB sponsors H-1B VISAS; however, there are other requirements that must be met before the petition to the U.S. Immigration Service is submitted.

Does your program impose a limit on the graduate year of applicants? 
Yes. You must have graduated from an ACGME approved medical school within 5 years of application or will meet necessary requirements for graduation before residency begins - Medical School Diploma.

Is there a deadline for taking the USMLE Step 3 exam? 
Yes. Successful completion of the USMLE Step 3 on your first attempt by the time of Match Day for those who are seeking H1-B visa status.

Does your program accept Complex scores from DO applicants? 
Yes. Successful completion of the USMLE step 1 with a min score of 80 OR the FLEX 1 & 2 (a combination of the exams is not acceptable).

What is the preferred method of communication during the application cycle? 
We participate in the ERAS program (Electronic Residency Application Service); therefore, we only accept applications using this process. No paper applications will be considered. Please do not fax your applications as they will not be reviewed.

General FAQ                                                                                  

How many positions do you have?
That depends on the residency slots available - usually 8-9 positions

How many teaching Attendings do you have?
There are 5 full time faculty physicians, with 3 part time faculty physicians and 60 volunteer faculty physicians associated with or program. 

What are the academic activities?

• Daily Noon Conferences
• Monthly Journal Club
• Thrice weekly Morning Report
• Weekly Grand Rounds
• Weekly visiting faculty Teaching Rounds
• Quarterly CPC
• Bimonthly Bedside Teaching Rounds

How is the housing?
We do not provide housing at our facility, but there is plenty of housing accommodations close by our facility and Baptist South Medical Center.  

How many admissions per shift?
We have two (2) GMS teams in the hospital.  Our teams cap is 18 patients per team.

How is the call schedule?
We have Overnight Call, Long Call and Short Call. Attached is a sample of a GMS Call Schedule.

Is there elective time during the first year?  
For preliminary interns, one to two months of elective is available preferably in the field, which they will eventually enter.

 Do you have a computer system?

• Computers are available on all floors and units.
• Cerner and HPF are the two systems we use
• Cerner - you can check your current and past labs, radiology reports and past medical records of admissions in Baptist hospitals.
• HPF - you can complete your charts and also will be able to get records of past admissions.
• Internet available on computers in call room and library

 What is the vacation time?

• Vacation Time - Three (3) weeks per academic year
• Sick Leave - Three (3) weeks per academic year
• Educational Leave - Five (5) days per year for poster presentations, abstracts, interviews, conference attendance.

What is the daily schedule?

Who writes/dictates the discharge summaries and orders? 
This is the responsibility of the residents.

What research opportunities would I have here?

• Residents present abstracts/posters at regional/national meetings
• - American College of Physician (ACP)
• - Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM)
• Opportunities for small independent research projects

What Fellowship opportunities would I have here?
Since 1985, Thirty (30) % of graduates have been appointed to fellowships. 21% of fellowships have been with our main campus at UAB. 

Specialties include: Nephrology, Pulmonary/Critical Care, Cardiology, Hem oncology/Oncology, GI, ID, Rheumatology, and Endocrinology

Resident's Benefits

Our residents are given the same pay and benefits as our main campus at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Resident's salaries for the 2009-2010 academic year are as follows:
