Distinguished Lecture Speakers and Topics
The University of Alabama School of Medicine Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency Program had its genesis under the tutelage of the late Dr. Tinsley Harrison in the late 1960's. With the support of the local medical community, Dr. Harrison helped to establish this training program and had a major and continued impact on the educational philosophy of learning medicine at the bedside. As part of this proud tradition, the Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 1978 to enrich the experience of the house staff by affording them the opportunity to interact with individuals whose career has been centered on medical education and clinical research. The Distinguished Lecture Series has been revitalized through the generosity of Dr. Rexford Kennamer, a retired cardiologist in California and a graduate of the School of Medicine. The event attracts members of the medical community, the School of Medicine, and civic, political, and business leaders.
Attending Rounds (AR) - Coming Soon!
The team visits, assesses, and discusses each patient on a daily basis. Teams generally round for two to three hours in the morning, combining bedside teaching rounds with a focus on the particular issues of the patients' care for the day. Often, teams will have small group sessions before or after rounds for informal didactic teaching. The teaching attending physicians are encouraged to round in a timely manner to allow attendance to all the teaching conferences.
Morning Report (MR)
July - October 2009 Morning Report Schedule
Morning report is held for 45 minutes at 7:30 in the morning 3 days a week for all residents who are in the GMS service, and also for some residents on consultation services or electives. One resident (PGY 1, 2 or 3) is assigned to present a case for discussion. The purpose of the discussion is differential diagnosis, management, and to impart medical knowledge. A medicine attending or the chief resident leads the discussion. At the end of the case, the resident shares what she/he learned from the case. Residents are encouraged to show pertinent medical images such as pictures of physical exam findings, or radiologic studies.
Noon Conference
June 2009 Noon Conference and Morning Report Schedule
Noon conferences are presented every day of the week except for Thursdays. The speakers include full time faculty, part time faculty, voluntary faculty, chief resident, residents, and invited speakers. Trainees are required to attend at least 80% of these sessions each year. There are a number of core lectures that are given every academic year to cover important topics for the new PGY 1s. The remaining lectures cover a broad variety of topics among the different areas of inpatient and ambulatory medicine. A Morbidity and Mortality Conference is scheduled once a month to review the 30 day readmissions, deaths on the GMS service, and discuss patient safety care issues. Journal Club is scheduled at least once a month, and a resident discusses an important paper with the assistance of a faculty member.
Medical Ground Rounds (MGR)
October - December Grand Rounds
Grand Rounds are held on Thursdays throughout the academic year from 12-1 PM. Speakers include visiting faculty from other institutions, invited speakers from the School of Medicine, and UAB Montgomery faculty members. The format is either an hour presentation on one particular topic or a clinical pathologic conference. The residents attend a case presentation (presented by a resident) to the visiting speakers prior to Medical Grand Rounds which gives them an opportunity for personal interaction and individualized teaching.
Bedside or Teaching Rounds (BTR) - Coming Soon!
Teaching rounds with invited physicians or healthcare workers are held during the academic year once or twice a month. A case is presented by a resident (PGY 1, 2 or 3) and the invited speaker discusses the case in a teaching format. Presence at the bedside is encouraged. These bedside teaching sessions are 45 minutes in duration.
