TBI Database Sees New GrowthResearch is a scientific process with strict guidelines. The information
collected needs to be accurate and complete. The TBI Model System created a
National Database in 1989 to collect the data. From 1989-1998 the five
participating Centers added information on over 1000 cases. The goal, with
the 12 new TBIMS Centers added in 1998, is to add at least 300 new cases each
year. The more complete information added to the database, the less the
possibility that the results occurred by chance.
The data collected at each TBIMS Center provides long range information on an individual with TBI. It follows the person from the time of their injury, through acute care, rehabilitation and annually after their return home. This information evaluates both the recovery and long-term outcomes following TBI. As the National TBIMS Database grows, it will provide a more complete picture of the TBI population. Results will show the needs of the individuals and the effectiveness of treatments and services. This national data set can provide a standard of measure from which to judge expected outcomes. For specifics on the TBIMS Database, visit the web site at www.tbims.org/database.html. The web site lists the categories of information collected and statistics on the key characteristics. The manager of the database also publishes a newletter, Traumatic Brain Injury Facts and Figures, twice a year.
