Welcome to the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at UAB. The links of this website are intended to present you with general information on our vision, mission, goals, undergraduate and graduate programs, research activities, facilities, and the special programs available to you only in this department. Our mission is to educate individuals to become the leaders of the profession. Our undergraduate program showcases several disciplines within civil engineering and provides our students with a sound and broad education that prepares them for professional practice. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary team work, communication skills, new tools and skills for professional practice, and lifelong learning. We strive to ensure that our graduates understand professional ethics and the value of service to their profession and society through involvement in community, state, and national organizations. We offer a distinguished program of graduate study and creative research in selected areas of civil, construction, and environmental engineering. The primary focus areas are construction, environmental, structural, and transportation engineering. Active research programs in these areas are geared towards improving the scientific and technological basis for civil, construction, and environmental engineering practice. Our research programs cross the boundaries of the School of Engineering as well as providing multidisciplinary collaborative research with faculty in the Schools of Business, Medicine, Natural Science and Mathematics (Departments of Physics and Biology), Public Health, and Social and Behavioral Science. Assisting the department in achieving its goals and objectives is a dedicated industry Advisory Board composed of a group of high-ranking engineers and industry leaders. The Advisory Board interacts closely with the department's faculty and students, and is involved in all major academic and research endeavors in the department. The Board is also regularly involved in the outcome assessment process of our academic program; an over the years has taken an active role in reviewing the department's strategic plan and providing invaluable advice and support to all aspects of our program. We pride ourselves in the varied research initiatives and special programs residing in the department. The University Transportation Center for Alabama (UTCA) Birmingham office is located in the department; the Center's theme is "management and safety" of transportation systems, and constitutes an active resource for research funding for faculty, staff, and students across the university. The EARTH Center, also housed in the department, provides a mechanism for enhancing environmental research, education, and the dissemination of knowledge regarding environmental issues, concerns, and regulations. The Alabama Industries Professorship in Environmental Engineering (AIPEE) in the department supports the EARTH Center and provides linkages between industry and our academic program. Another area of expertise recently established in the department is in motor vehicle crash and injury. The research program has been established collaboratively with the UAB School of Medicine's Department of Surgery through the UAB CIREN Center (Crash Injury Research and Engineering Networks). This Center provides vast opportunities for interactions between medical and engineering research programs at UAB. Finally, I would like to invite you to browse through our website and to feel free to contact me ( ffouad@uab.edu) with any questions or additional information that you may desire. We appreciate your interest, look forward to your involvement with us, and certainly do hope to meet you.
