Quick Facts This academic year, almost 800 undergraduate and graduate engineering students enrolled in the UAB School of Engineering.
Sixty-five faculty members direct the school’s academic and research programs in biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, civil and environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.
In addition to the many opportunities for graduate fellowships, over one-third of undergraduate students receive financial support through scholarships and internships.
Since Birmingham has one of the largest concentrations of engineering and construction companies in the Southeast, students have many opportunities to participate in co-op and internship programs.
The School of Engineering’s Leadership Program provides students with the opportunity to develop personal and professional leadership skills. A Certificate in Leadership is awarded to students who elect to participate in this program.
UAB medical center programs are among the highest ranked programs in the country. Students interested in pursuing a medically related career have unique opportunities to explore clinical internships and research experiences in these programs.
Research programs in the UAB School of Engineering are affiliated with Southern Research Institute. Active grants and contracts currently total over $27 million.

Engineering students are actively involved in student organizations. During Homecoming 2002, the School of Engineering placed third (among UAB’s twelve schools) in the campus-wide Spirit Contest. Miss UAB for 2002 is Juanita Titrud, a biomedical engineering student, and runner-up for Mr. UAB 2002 is Jeremiah Haswell, a mechanical engineering student. Engineering students at UAB are outstanding in every respect.
