UABUAB Provost

UAB Office of the Provost

UAB Provost, Eli I. CapiloutoAs chief academic officer of The University of Alabama at Birmingham, I am privileged to work closely with UAB's talented administrators, faculty, staff, and students. One of my 2008 goals is to work my way from one end of the campus to the other, meeting with members of our UAB community to listen to their concerns. I ask participants at each meeting to share one positive UAB experience from the past week. The stories they provide continue to inspire me.

As you read about our UAB success stories, you will find the key to our many nationally ranked programs and recognition:  an unbounded imaginative spirit, a relentless commitment to learning, and the deep curiosity of faculty dedicated to empowering our students to better serve mankind.

Our faculty also understand that this generation of learners wants to meet challenges head-on in a global society, and they are willing to lead them there. At UAB the world is our classroom with numerous opportunities for exploration. At home and abroad, these discoveries not only enrich our students; they often result in humanitarian efforts that improve the quality of life for citizens of the world.

The diverse population on our campus also offers us a chance to broaden our horizons through contact with people from all walks of life. Almost one-third of our student body and 40% of our work force are minorities, and we enjoy numerous events throughout the year reflecting the cultures of the 121 countries represented on campus.

The Office of the Provost is committed to serving the needs of this community by supporting its programs and advancing new initiatives in education, research and service in accordance with the UAB Strategic Plan, developed under the leadership of President Carol Garrison.

I hope this site will provide useful resources for our UAB community and helpful information for visitors as well. I encourage you to contact the Office of the Provost if we can assist you in your UAB experience.

Sincerely,

Eli I. Capilouto

It’s an especially exciting opportunity for Zhang, who came to UAB from China in 1989 as a post-doctoral fellow.

  • CORD Ready for Another Year of Its Summer Science Institute

Just because summer is here doesn’t mean that learning and exploration must come to an end. • Service Project Empowers Young Girls in Online World

Rebecca Yeboah says she has never seen her girls so engaged. Sure, the eighth-graders at Girls Inc. of Bessemer enjoy their exercise program, have fun while they learn cooking skills and are hands-on with their craft activities – all of which are important activities for their development as productive young members of society. But it was when they got the opportunity to learn how to create and maintain their own password-protected Web site – Speak Out – that things really started clicking for them.

  • Inner-City Schools

UAB’s School of Education is pulling out all the stops to reduce the rate of school dropouts—not the students, but the teachers.

  • UAB Faculty, High-School Students both Benefit from Mentoring

It’s not every day a 16-year-old gets an opportunity to do research work on cancer. Stephen Hicks, a just-graduated 18-year-old from Mountain Brook High School, is happy to point that out. He was that 16-year-old.

  • When Genes Don't Fit:

Eat less, exercise more: This simple advice can go a long way in battling obesity. However, recent studies indicate some of us may have an easier fight than others—not only due to environment, but also due to genes and race.

  • Sweet Dreams: The Science of Sleep

The UAB School of Health Professions new polysomnography (PSG) certificate program, offered by the Department of Critical Care, creates a convenient way for health professionals to enter this field and for labs to find trained personnel. The program is run in coordination with the UAB Sleep/Wake Disorders Center.
