Office of Undergraduate Programs and Student Services

The Undergraduate Programs Office, located in BEC 203, provides support services to School of Business students. Academic advisement is one of the principal services provided. The undergraduate advisors typically have their first contact with students at New Student Orientation. They in turn work with students throughout their time at UAB, assisting them in preparing their class schedules, monitoring their academic progress, and offering guidance to those having difficulty. The advisors are primarily concerned with each student’s successful and timely completion of degree requirements. Students are generally assigned to an advisor based on the first letter of the student’s last name and are encouraged to make appointments to meet with the advisor on a regular basis, at least once per term.

The School of Business scholarship office is housed in the Undergraduate Programs Office. A number of scholarships, available to business students at all levels, are awarded on an annual basis. The application deadline for freshmen is December 15th; and, the deadline for transfer and currently enrolled students is February 1st for all scholarships commencing in the fall semester. In addition to scholarships administered in the School of Business exclusively for business majors, the UAB Office of Financial Aid offers a number of other scholarship opportunities to UAB students in general. Melody Lake, Director of Advising, works with the Chairs of the three academic departments within the School in coordinating the preparation of the annual class schedule. She is also charged with applying the adopted academic standards of the School and addressing those situations where students are not in compliance. She accepts and processes through appropriate channels petitions of students who appeal their dismissal from the School of Business for deficient academic performance. She serves as the principal liaison of the School with the UAB Offices of Registration and Academic Records, Enrollment Management, and Academic Policies and Procedures. Petitions of students who request special concessions related to course registration without stated prerequisites are handled by each department’s chairman.
