In 2005, SACS, our accrediting body, required UAB to successfully complete a compliance audit and develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that focuses on student learning.
The focus of our QEP is to improve, in a comprehensive and integrative way, fundamental learning competencies at the undergraduate level. The competencies targeted for initial enhancement are:
- writing,
- quantitative literacy,
- and ethics and civic responsibility.
These competencies are introduced through a First Year Experience composed of
- discussion groups and other activities related to the UAB Discussion Book
- learning communities
- a first-year experience course to begin Fall 2008.
Every undergraduate program must reinforce the targeted competencies by integrating them into its curriculum for majors and synthesize the QEP competencies and discipline-specific outcomes in a senior capstone course or experience.
