Chemistry
In clinical chemistry, medical technologists operate and analyze data from chemical analyzers. Test results may indicate the presence of serious diseases such as:
  • diabetes;
  • cirrhosis of the liver;
  • heart attack;
  • thyroid conditions; and
  • fetal respiratory development.

Medical technologists provide information regarding the effectiveness of therapy in:
  • heart disease;
  • asthma;
  • epilepsy;
  • infection;
  • testing;
  • phenylketonuria (a mental retardation if not treated); and
  • chemical procedures (tests for substances used by drug abusers).

The competencies required for clinical chemistry are also useful in forensic and environmental testing laboratories.
