In clinical chemistry, medical technologists operate and analyze data from chemical analyzers. Test results may indicate the presence of serious diseases such as:
- diabetes;
- cirrhosis of the liver;
- heart attack;
- thyroid conditions; and
- fetal respiratory development.
Medical technologists provide information regarding the effectiveness of therapy in:
- heart disease;
- asthma;
- epilepsy;
- infection;
- testing;
- phenylketonuria (a mental retardation if not treated); and
- chemical procedures (tests for substances used by drug abusers).
The competencies required for clinical chemistry are also useful in forensic and environmental testing laboratories.
