Dietetic Internship, Postbaccalaureate Certificate in

The dietetic internship prepares entry-level dietitians for careers in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, health care agencies, government, food industries, restaurants, schools, and private practice. Dietitians assist individuals and families in choosing food for adequate nutrition in health or disease throughout the life cycle, supervise the preparation and service of food in groups, develop modified diets, and participate in nutrition research.

Accreditation: The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education for The American Dietetic Association.

Credentials Conferred: Certificate ­ A certificate of completion is awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There is an option for completion of the M.S. degree requirements (see Clinical Nutrition, Master of Science in).

Professional Certification: The graduate is eligible to take the national registration examination for dietitians.

Length of Study: 10 months.

Program Entrance Date: Fall semester.

Application Deadline: Approximately February 15 of each year.

Application Procedure: Application materials are available from the program and on-line at www.uab.edu/dieteticinternship; complete and return to the department by the February deadline.

Requirements for Admission­ Prerequisites: For unconditional acceptance, an applicant must:

  • have a B.S. degree with a B average;
  • a minimum GRE score of 500 on verbal and 500 on quantitative section, plus take the GRE writing assessment, or a minimum score of 50 on the MAT;
  • Submit a Commission of Accreditation in dietetics Education (CADE) Verification Statement or Declartion of Intent to Complete Degree and/or CADE Accredidated Minimum Academic Requirement;
  • submit other items listed in the application packet; and
  • if accepted, complete the UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, provide proof of required immunizations, and receive satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service.
