M. Paige Powell, Ph.D., MHA, earned a doctorate in Health Policy and Administration from Penn State University in May 2003. Dr. Powell also holds a bachelor degree in Health Policy and Administration and a Master of Health Administration degree, both from The University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to joining the Health Services Administration (Health Care Management) faculty, she worked for the University of South Carolina, first as Research Fellow at the South Carolina Rural Health Research Center and later as a Research Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Health Services Policy and Management and at the South Carolina Rural Health Research Center in Columbia, SC. Her current research focuses on the use and coverage of prescription drugs in the Medicare population. Dr. Powell’s dissertation work focused on complement and substitute effects between prescription drug insurance and hospital and physician visits. Dr. Powell will continue to explore complement and substitute relationships between prescription drugs and other services in various settings. She also plans to examine rural and urban differences in pharmaceutical treatment among Medicare patients with Alzheimers Disease. Dr. Powell’s teaching interests are in the areas of Health Policy and Government Regulation, Health Law, Health Ethics, Health Planning and Marketing, Health Systems, and Consumer Health Issues.
