Norman W. Weissman, Ph.D., Dr. Weissman is a Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration and in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine of the Department of Medicine, and is co-Director of the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He, also, holds UAB appointments as Senior Scientist at the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, the Center for Disaster Preparedness, the Center for Aging, the Arthritis Center, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the General Clinical Research Center and the Injury Control Research Center. His current research activities include participation on five active Federal research projects: 1) Measuring Quality by Achievable Benchmarks of Care (ABC), 2) Impact of Guidelines on Quality of Care: Unstable Angina, 3) Innovative Approaches to Training Clinicians for Bioterrorist Attacks, 4) An Internet Intervention to Increase Chlamydia Screening, and 5) Musculoskeletal Disease Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics.

Prior to moving to UAB, he spent twenty-four years in the Public Health Service, most of them as Director of Extramural Research at predecessor organizations of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (i.e., NCHSR and AHCPR). He is a past CEO of the International Society of Technology Assessment in Health Care, an Associate Editor of their Journal (IJTAHC), and a consultant on health services research to many governmental agencies and private organizations. In addition, to consulting at the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation on quality improvement projects, he is a member of national advisory committees at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Robert Wood Johnson Family Foundation and the National Library of Medicine. He holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Physiology and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Maryland.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Weissman has spent most of his career administering multidisciplinary health services research activities and will work with the PI on managing operations of the project, that integrate the CERT and its projects with the participating UAB Centers, the Advisory Committees, the CERT Coordinating Center and the funding and data sources.
