Dr. Hiett's primary area of interest is the use of computers in education and in health administration. He also has a major interest in international activities, having worked on projects in the Republic of Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, China, and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Hiett earned the MS degree in 1957 and the PH.D. degree in 1972, both from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1972, he joined the Health Administration faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1995, after 23 years of teaching courses related to the use of computers and of quantitative methods in health administration, Professor Hiett retired and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University. He continues to conduct consulting projects applying quantitative methods, especially simulation, to the design and administration of operational systems. His clients include the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and the VAMC Birmingham.
