July 14th - 18th, 2008

July 14th - 18th will see the Department of Justice Sciences hosting its 1st Annual "Camp CSI Birmingham" summer day-camp for high school students in grades 10 - 12.  The week-long camp will focus on a variety of forensic science topics including DNA, fingerprint analysis, trace evidence, crime scene assessment, and more.  Students participating in the camp will have both laboratory-based instruction and engage in practical exercises relating to forensic-science based topics.  Dr. Jason Linville (jglinvil@uab.edu), MSFS Program Director will lead the camp, which will also involve several MSFS students as assistants and team leaders.

Honors Colloquium -- The Department is hosting its annual Honors Reserach and Colloquium Luncheon at which the five undergraduate honors students in this year's class -- Austin D. Duncan (Mentor: Dr. John Sloan), Rena L. Hammer (Mentor: Dr. Elizabeth Gardner), Joel R. Kiser (Mentor: Dr. Kathryn Morgan), Rosa M. Obregon (Mentor: Dr. J. Heith Copes), and Rebekah K. Pearson (Mentor: Dr. Kent Kerley) -- will present their research and be recognized.  Outstanding student awards for the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department will also be presented to Laura S. Waters (Outstanding MSFS Student); Nazanine Ebrahimi (Outstanding Criminal Justice Student -- Undergraduate) and Girish Umamaheshwar (Outstanding MSCJ Student).  10:30 am - 1:15 pm; HUC 413.

The Department of Justice Sciences is co-sponsoring, with the Tuscaloosa Field Office of the FBI, a three-day seminar on Hostage Negoitation for law enforcement professionals. Experts from FBI Headquarters will do the training. 8:30 am - 5:00 p.m. HUC Alumni Auditorium.

The Criminal Justice Student Organization (CJSO) will have its February meeting at 12:00 p.m. today in the Burr & Forman Mock Courtroom (UBOB 226). Agenda items will include discussion of upcoming activities such as a bake sale and book drive. All are welcome!

Gary Warner, Director of Research in Computer Forensics, will give a lecture on BotNets and other cyber victimization issues Friday, October 19th, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. The lecture is part of "CyberCrime Awareness Month," sponsored by the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. The lecture will take place in the Hill University Center (HUC) Alumni Auditorium; admission is free and the lecture is open to the public. For more information, click here.
