GOLDWATER – Aaron Neal (Chemistry) has been awarded a Goldwater for his research on malaria. He hopes to complete a MD/PhD and to conduct research on infectious disease pathology. Luke Stannard (Mathematics)was given an Honorable Mention. Luke plans to work in designing and applying biomedical techniques.
ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA – Christina Ho (alumn) won the top ALD Mariah Leonard award. Christina is currently on a Fulbright scholarship, doing research on TB in Vietnam.
UNCF/Merck UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH – Jocelyn Gipson (Biology) has won the prestigious award. Jocelyn has done research on Public Health issues and plans to complete a MD/PhD with a focus on immunology or pathology.
DEPT OF STATE CRITICAL LANGUAGES SCHOLARSHIP – Adam Smith (Political Science) and
Kirby Russell (International Studies) have both been selected for the competitive critical languages summer program in intermediate Arabic. Adam will be in Oman and Kirby in Tunisia.
DAAD-RISE - The German Academic Research Exchange Service has selected
Elise Ottenfeld (Chemistry) to undertake research in Germany during the summer of 2009.
INSTITUTE FOR HUMANE STUDIES – Jennifer Ghandhi (Economics) was selected for the Spring Break Seminar on Liberty at UC, San Diego. She made such an impression, that IHS invited her to be a participant in the summer seminar program in Washington DC.
2008 winners ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA - UAB once again has had a record number of winners.
Suzanne M. McCluskey (Biology major) won the ALD Margie Wade Fellowship. Suzanne served as ALD President for the 2006/2007 school year.
Sara Singhal (Biology and Philosophy double major) won the Dorothy Anderson Fellowship. Sara served as ALD Reporter for the 2006/2007 school year and served as ALD President for the 2007/2008 school year.
Sheila Venkatesh (Biology major) won the Patricia Graham Fellowship. Sheila served as Vice President for Initiation for the 2006/2007 school year.
GOLDWATER SCHOLARS - In 2008, UAB had its highest number of Goldwater winners.
Taoreed (Larry) Lawal (Biomedical Engineering and Biology majors) has been conducting research in molecular genetics and plans to pursue a MD/PhD.
Cierra Spencer (Biochemistry and Philosophy majors) has been conducting research in photochemistry and hopes to pursue a research career in pharmacology.
Pratik Talati (Chemistry and Mathematics majors) specializes in Biochemistry and hopes to enroll for a MD in Psychiatry and a PhD in Psychopharmacology.
FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS -
Shelton Wright (3rd year medical student at UAB School of Medicine) has won a Fulbright research grant to Chile. Shelton plans to do research on the potential role of T-regulatory cells to decrease gastrointestinal inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, combining lab research at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile with fieldwork. In addition, Shelton, a keen amateur photographer, hopes to prepare a photographic exhibition profiling and comparing students'experiences of their first year medical education in Chile and the United States.
Christina Ho (Biology major) has won a research grant to Vietnam. Christina plans to investigate a possible reason for Vietnam's continued TB infection rates by studying the practices of handling medical waste in hospitals and TB prevalence. She will collect waste samples from Haiphong Medical University Hospital and Institute of TB and Lung Disease in Hanoi, test the toxicity of the waste through cell culture, and then determine whether there is a correlation between medical waste management and TB distribution.
PHI KAPPA PHI FELLOWSHIP -
Suzanne McCluskey (Biology major) is one of sixty national recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi fellowship. Suzanne plans to enrol in the UAB School of Medicine.
UNCF/MERCK UNDERGRADUATE SCIENCE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP - Cierra Spencer, a double Biochemistry and Philosophy junior, has been selected as one of 15 national recipients of this prestigious award. Cierra plans to enroll in a Master's program, and eventually a PhD in pharmacology at a top university. Ultimately, she hopes to conduct research for a pharmaceutical company in the development of treatments for infectious diseases.
ALL-USA ACADEMIC COLLEGE 3rd TEAM WINNER - Libby (Olivia) Telle, has won a place in the highly competitive USA Today 3rd team. Libby, a Biology/Spanish major, is in the University Honors Program, is a McNair scholar and volunteers as a parent coach at UAB Hospital in the Shaken Baby Prevention Program. With the UAB Center for the Study of Community Health, she undertook a public health project and co-designed some of the training materials and lessons for the courses of a Ministerial Certificate of Public Health program at an inner city Bible college.
TEACH FOR AMERICA - Congratulations to
Lindsay Swain and
Christopher Watson on being selected to join the highly competitive Teach for America Program. Lindsay will be working in the Rio Grande area of Texas teaching Social Studies and Christopher will be working in Atlanta teaching Biology. Christopher, in addition, won the AMGEN award, given to the 50 best science TFA teachers.
ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER - Congratulations to
Skye Geerts, a Theatre Studies major, who was awarded an academic one year Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study for a Master's in Drama and Performance Studies at Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland. We know that Skye will be a commendable ambassador for UAB and Alabama.
DAAD-RISE INTERNSHIP - The German Academic Research Exchange Service has selected
Pratik Talati (Mathematics and Chemistry majors) to undertake research in the Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany during the summer of 2008.
U.S. DEPT OF STATE CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP -
Elisha Gentle (Economics major) is one of the 127 recipients out of 3,300 applicants who received the US Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to learn Arabic in Jordan.
THE JAPAN EXCHANGE AND TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP -
Tyndall Testerman (International Studies major) won the JET scholarship to teach in Japan for a year.
