Shelia R. Cotten(Associate Professor, Ph.D., North CarolinaStateUniversity)Dr. Cotten
is Associate Professor at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham; she is also the Associate
Director of the Center for Social Medicine and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
and a Scientist with the Center for Aging at UAB.She received her bachelor’s degree in
sociology and psychology from WakeForestUniversity,
and her masters and doctoral degrees in sociology from North CarolinaStateUniversity.After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Cotten completed a post-doctoral fellowship in health
services research through the Veterans Administration and Boston University
School of Public Health.Dr. Cotten’s research investigates the interrelationships among
psychosocial resources and well-being.She is also interested in the social impacts of information and
communication technologies, particularly in relation to psychosocial resources
and health.Dr. Cotten’s
research has been published in journals such as Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Family Issues, CyberPsychology & Behavior, and Family Relations among others.Prior to joining the faculty at UAB, Dr. Cotten held a faculty position at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County (UMBC).
