The Resource Center is an employee assistance and counseling program designed to provide employees and their family members with resources for resolving work related and personal problems. We provide a variety of counseling, educational and wellness services in a safe and caring environment to enhance the well-being of individuals in all aspects of life. We address the concerns of people with diverse needs and life experiences with respect for the dignity and confidentiality of each individual.
Because the Resource Center Employee Assistance and Counseling Program is provided by UAB as a benefit for employees, our services are provided at no cost to UAB employees and their immediate family members (an immediate family member is someone who is eligible for insurance coverage through the UAB employee's health benefits or who lives in the same house with the UAB employee).
Our services include individual, couples, and family counseling to assist you in clarifying issues, exploring options, and finding solutions. We also provide Divorce Mediation services for a fee.
We help people work through many issues, including:
- Stress at work or home
- Marriage, relationship or family problems
- Alcohol or drug addiction
- Smoking
- Grief and loss
- Loneliness
- Communication problems
- Depression or mood swings
- Eating disorders
- Self-esteem issues
- Stress related to physical or mental illness
- Stress related to finances.
Because the Resource Center is provided by UAB as a benefit for employees, UAB Resource Center services (with the exception of Divorce Mediation) are available at no cost to UAB employees and their immediate family members.
Every consultation with the Resource Center EAP at UAB is strictly confidential. Information about your visits is not included in personnel records, nor is it revealed to supervisors, coworkers, colleagues, friends or family members.
The services of the Resource Center Employee Assistance Program at UAB are voluntary. You may come to us on your own initiative or at the suggestion of a supervisor, friend, coworker or family member.
Unlike many Employee Assistance Programs, we have a full staff of licensed, certified professional counselors. That means that you will be able to work through your problems with one counselor dedicated to helping you. We can also refer you to outside agencies that specialize in medical/psychiatric, financial, or legal assistance if necessary.
We also provide consultation and supervisor training to help supervisors work more effectively with employees who are experiencing performance problems in the workplace. Supervisors may refer employees to the Resource Center and require that they attend one session. Any further sessions are completely at the discretion of the employee. The Resource Center will provide verification of attendance if requested. No other information is released to the supervisor without the employee’s consent.
