About the UAB.edu Web site

The updated UAB.EDU front door, landing pages, and coordinating inner page templates were launched August 5, 2005.

The UAB Strategic Plan, site traffic information, secondary research, and primary research with visitors to uab.edu informed the update process.

The information architecture of the site has been updated to include clear audience, topic, and task navigation options on the front door, plus links to secondary-level landing pages. The organization and prioritization of landing page content was influenced by user research conducted by Righi Interface Engineering.

Landing pages include the following:

  • Prospective Students;
  • Current Students;
  • Faculty;
  • Staff;
  • Alumni & Donors;
  • About UAB;
  • Academics;
  • Athletics, Recreation, and Arts;
  • Employment;
  • Health Care;
  • Information Technology; and
  • Research.

Browser Compatibility

The front door, landing pages, and coordinating inner page templates have been tested and render the same on the following browsers:

  • Camino 0.8.4 for Mac;
  • IE6+ on Windows;
  • FireFox 1+ on any platform;
  • Netscape 6+ on any platform;
  • OmniWeb 5.1+ for Mac;
  • Opera 8+ on any platform; and
  • Safari 1+ on Mac.

The templates will degrade gracefully for all other browsers and all content items will be available.

Accessibility

The templates are section 508-compliant. They are also compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. These are more strict accessibility guidelines, published by W3C. These guidelines offer three priorities--P1, P2, and P3--with P1 being essentially Section 508, and P2, P3 being the progressively stricter set of guidelines. The templates comply up to WCAG1 P3, the strictest guideline priority

Also, templates have been designed with Web standards in mind and are known to comply and validate according to the standard specifications, provided by W3C. The front door and landing page templates are served in XHTML 1.0 Transitional, and the inner page template is served in HTML 4.01 Transitional.
