Book Highlights the Writings of "Champion of the Everglades"

Before her death in 1998 at age 108, Marjory Stoneman Douglas was best known to Florida residents as a “champion of the Everglades.” A passionate environmentalist and journalist, her groundbreaking book, The Everglades: River of Grass, published in 1947, was credited for bringing public attention to the Everglades.


Eye Study Gives Children with Lazy Eye New Option

Eye drops to treat the most common cause of visual impairment in children — amblyopia, or lazy eye — work as well as the standard treatment of patching, according to a study in the March issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

Majority of Birmingham Residents Believe More Terrorist Attacks in the United States Likely, Says Poll

Fifty-one percent of Birmingham area residents say they expect another terrorist attack in the United States within the year. Nearly 40 percent say they have experienced more fear and anxiety since viewing television coverage of the terrorist attacks on September 11, while a majority, nearly 60 percent, believe there is nothing they can do to avoid becoming a victim of terrorism.


Pittman Wins Henze Cystic Fibrosis Award

James A. Pittman, Jr., M.D., distinguished professor of medicine at UAB, has been awarded the Karlin Henze Memorial Award presented by the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at UAB. The award was created in honor of Karlin Henze, a research assistant at the center until her death from cystic fibrosis in February of 1999.


UAB, Tulane Partner to Establish Bioterrorism Preparedness Center

Public health schools at UAB and Tulane University in New Orleans are partnering to establish the South Central Center for Public Health Preparedness. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced funding for the center as part of the $2.9 billion set aside by President Bush to enhance bioterrorism preparedness.

Medical School "Match Day" March 21

Firefighters Fight Fat

Firefighters with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service are staging a united front to fight fat. Hearty Fire Station Cuisine, a cookbook featuring dietician-approved, kitchen-tested recipes of Birmingham firefighters, is a project of the Good Health Program. The School of Nursing at UAB and the City of Birmingham administer the wellness program for city employees.


UAB Hospital Garners National Recognition as a "Center for Excellence" in Nursing

UAB Hospital has joined a very elite group of hospitals across the nation recognized as a nursing "center for excellence." The hospital was notified yesterday about its recognition as a Magnet hospital, a designation awarded by the American Nurses Association to fewer than 50 of the nation's 5,800 hospitals.


Faye-Petersen Honored by Pathology Society

Dr. Ona Faye-Petersen, associate professor of pathology and obstetrics and gynecology at UAB, has received the Special Distinguished Colleague Award from the Society for Pediatric Pathology at its annual meeting in Chicago. The award is given on occasion of merit for outstanding contribution to the society and promotion of the scholarly and quality practice of pediatric pathology.


Liber Wins Kennan Institute Grant

UAB's Goldman Named Distinguished Service Professor

Study Examines Genetic Factors of Pain Disorder

A new study under way at UAB aims to determine if the sisters of women with fibromyalgia may be at greater risk for developing a heightened sensitivity to pain and if so, if one or more genes are associated with this increased risk. This is the first study examining sex-related genetic factors associated with fibromyalgia, a disorder characterized by chronic muscle pain and unusually high pain sensitivity.


New UAB HIV/AIDS Initiative Targets Black Churches

UAB has begun a new program aimed at developing partnerships with African-American churches to address the growing rate of HIV infections in the black community. The African-American HIV Initiative will be conducted under the auspices of UAB's 1917 Outpatient AIDS Clinic, and led by Chris Hamlin, D.Min.


UAB Researchers Discover Remains of Earliest Known Life on Earth

A team of UAB scientists, along with scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), have discovered the organic remains of life that existed on Earth 3.5 billion years ago. Details of the discovery will be published in the March 7 edition of the scientific journal Nature.

UAB Alumnus Neelaksh Varshney Wins Major National Soros Graduate Fellowship for New Americans

UAB alumnus Neelaksh “Neel” Varshney has been awarded one of thirty 2002 Paul and Daisy Soros New American Fellowships. Varshney will receive a $20,000 annual maintenance stipend plus half-tuition for as many as two years of graduate study at any institution of higher learning in the United States.


UAB Student David Murphy Named to USA Today Third Team

UAB junior David Murphy, 21, of Hoover, Alabama, has been named to a spot on the USA Today 2002 All-USA College Academic Third Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 60 college students in the United States. USA Today published the winners in a special section on Wednesday, February 27.
