Grimes Named Engineer of the Year

Gary J. Grimes, Ph.D., Wallace R. Bunn Professor of Telecommunications in the UAB School of Engineering and executive director of the UAB Center for Telecommunications Education and Research, was recently honored as 2000 Engineer of the Year by the Engineering Council of Birmingham.


Antibiotic Effective for Rare Genetic Disease

A commonly prescribed antibiotic used to fight bacterial infections may prove effective in treating genetic diseases such as Hurler Syndrome, according to a recent study by researchers at UAB. Details of the study appear in the February issue of Human Molecular Genetics.



UAB to Honor Six Outstanding Women

They've displayed strength, knowledge and compassion toward others, and on Thursday, March 1, they will be recognized for the women they are. On that day, a reception will be held, 4:30-5:30 p.m., at the UAB Bartow Arena, Green and Gold Room, 617 13th Street South, to honor six Outstanding Women, Sarah Morgan, M.D., Beth Kitchin, Mary Nash, Linda Manchillas-Patterson, Eugenia Gamble and Lillie Fincher.


Medical Students Remember Donors

Medical students at UAB will pay their last respects to those who have donated their bodies to scientific study at a memorial service for the Total Willed Body Donor program at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium, corner of 19th St. and 7th Ave, on UAB’s campus. The service is hosted by the members of the Class of 2004 of the School of Medicine.


New Advice for Abnormal Pap Tests

Testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV) may help doctors and patients decide what to do about the mildly abnormal and very common Pap test result known as ASCUS, according to a national multi-center study in which UAB played a major role.


Physician Named to HHS Committee

Dr. Denise Thornley-Brown, assistant professor of medicine in the division of nephrology, has been named to the National Human Research Protections Advisory Committee. Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala appointed Thornley-Brown and 11 other experts to serve on the committee, which will advise the HHS on issues pertaining to human subjects protections and responsible conduct of human research.


Shealy Estate Donates $7 million to UAB

Some people quietly walk among us, never giving a clue as to the impact they someday will have on the world. Mrs. Voncile Shealy of Dothan, Alabama, was one of those people. An unassuming school teacher, wife, and stepmother, Mrs. Shealy died last fall, leaving a bequest to UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center totaling nearly $7.5 million. The gift, given in memory of Mrs. Shealy’s first husband, will be used to further life-saving cancer research.


Federal Grant to Provide Job Training

With the help of a new $60,000 grant awarded to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for Urban Affairs, North Titusville and Oakwood Place youths can learn to build houses, receive group counseling and obtain other assistance.


Jeffereys Elected as Delegate to MLA

Mark Jeffreys, Ph.D., associate professor of English at UAB, was recently elected as a delegate to the Modern Language Association of America (MLA). His term is three years.


UAB to Treat Adult Cystic Fibrosis Patients

UAB has begun seeing adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) at UAB Hospital and the Kirklin Clinic in February. Patients with CF require frequent hospitalizations and outpatient care, and are typically treated in pediatric hospitals from birth. In recent years, improvements in the treatment of the disease have nearly doubled the life expectancy for CF patients, allowing many to live well into adulthood.


UAB Student Named to USA Today First Team

UAB senior Kira E. Martin, 22, of Northport, Alabama, has been named to a spot on the USA Today 2001 All-USA College Academic First Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 20 college students in the United States. Martin is the third UAB student named to the Academic First Team and the only student from Alabama named to the team this year.


UAB Nurse Embarks on Medical Mission

Donna Whitlock, R.N. will sojourn to Gujarat, India, Wednesday, February 28. She will take donated medical supplies, equipment and monetary donations with her to India. She will spend her time helping to treat the wounded and search for the deceased.


UAB Seeks Alabama Public Health Hero

The School of Public Health at UAB is accepting nominations for Alabama's Public Health Hero for 2001 award. The school presents the award annually to a resident of Alabama in recognition of his or her paid or volunteer efforts to improve and protect the health of all Alabamians. Last year’s recipient was Dr. Sandral Hullett, a family physician in Ewtah, Alabama.


Changes in Stroke Mortality Trends

While stroke mortality rates continue to decline steadily for African Americans, the decline is not sufficient to make up for the 40 percent difference in rates between whites and blacks, according to a study by George Howard, Ph.D., chairman of the department of biostatistics at UAB. The study was presented today at the American Stroke Association’s 26th International Stroke Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.


2001 Visiting Ireland Distinguished Visiting Scholar Prize

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) cognitive scientist Steven Pinker, Ph.D., one of the world’s leading experts on language and the mind, will receive the 2001 Ireland Distinguished Visiting Scholar Prize. The prize is awarded annually by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.


AIDS Researcher to Deliver Reynolds Lecture

Dr. Jay Brooks Jackson, a leading AIDS researcher at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will deliver the 22nd Annual Reynolds Historical Lecture at UAB.


UAB, Lincoln Center Join City Schools to Teach Art

For the first time in Alabama, the Lincoln Center Institute will bring its aesthetic education program to elementary school students through a sponsorship with the UAB and Birmingham City Schools.
