GARY CHAPMAN, Professor of Painting and Drawing, University of Alabama at Birmingham (MFA, Cranbrook Academy of Art: BA and BS, Berea College)
Chapman has had over 47 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Arts Center of St. Petersburg, Florida;The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The University Art Museum of the University Southwestern Louisiana, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art, University of Cincinnati, University of Georgia, and the University of Miami. He has also participated in numerous group and invitational exhibitions with regional, national and international venues.
Chapman was selected to exhibit his work in the 2003 Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea, in Florence, Italy. In 1996 Chapman’s work was selected for exhibition with Ormeau Baths Gallery of Belfast, Northern Ireland as part of an exchange exhibition. In conjunction with his trip, he was invited to lecture and provide student tutorials at Wimbledon School of Art, England; Kent Institute of Art & Design, England; Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art, Wales; and the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Chapman’s work has received recognition and many awards from such notable figures as Carrie Przybilla, Ned Rifkin, Dennis Barrie, John Ravenal, Annette Carlozzi and Jack Cowart. He has received numerous grants and fellowships for his work including a 1996 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting from the Southern Arts Federation and 2002 and 1994 Individual Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. His work has been reviewed extensively and is published in over 20 catalogs and books including the Number 3, 16 and 52 Editions of New American Paintings.
Paintings by Chapman have been purchased for the collections of 10 southeastern museums. They are Birmingham, Huntsville, Jule Collins Smith, Mobile, Montgomery, Wiregrass, Meridian, FSU, Ogden and University Mississippi museums of art as well as by many corporate and private collections throughout the country.
