Ages: Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors

Dates: June 2-20; Application deadline is April 1. Teachers can nominate students or students can apply by submitting an application.

Description: Working closely with established novelists, essayists and poets, students will explore various genres, including poetry, fiction and memoir, gain professional writing experience drafting and critiquing original works, participate in a public reading of their work and enjoy visits to local cultural and historic sites. The cost is $600 without college credit; $879 with one hour elective college credit. Financial aid is available. Ages: Children entering the third, fourth and fifth grades

Dates: June 16-20; 8 a.m.-Noon

Description: Campers receive a “passport” for an imaginary trip around the globe. Instructors will introduce campers to the culture, food, music, dance and arts and crafts of several countries that represent different regions of the world. The cost is $50 per camper. Description: The UAB Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD) offers six exciting science camps for five weeks. Children can analyze data about the forest and its plants, use high-tech instruments to monitor air and water quality, learn about the gene pool and investigate the role DNA plays in living creatures.

Description: Sponsored by the UAB CORD, ChemBridge will provide area 8th grade graduates with an exciting journey into chemistry. BioTeach for Teachers

Dates: SSI I – II Three two-week sessions (June 16 - August 1)

SSI III – Eight Weeks (June 5 - August 1)

Description: Sponsored by UAB CORD, the Summer Science Institute (SSI) is a multi-summer research experience for high school students interested in learning what it is like to do real science. SSI consists of three levels. SSI I is the Fundamentals of Cellular and Molecular Biology, where high school sophomores and juniors are offered a variety of short, two- three-day, introductory molecular biology experiments to conduct. Three two-week sessions are offered. SSI II, Advanced Principles of Biology and Neurobiology, is for 10th and 11th grade students. SSI II lets students conduct biochemical investigations on different aspects of a specific, biologically important protein. Students entering the 11th and 12th grades can participate in SSI III, a Research Internship, where they are placed in research laboratories for eight weeks to work on their own original projects under the supervision of UAB faculty and staff.

Description: Students will gain a basic understanding of computer simulations using science and engineering principles and experience how these simulations can be used to solve everyday problems. They will participate in team projects involving in-class training and laboratory experiences. The cost is $125 per camper. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 18.

 

Middle School Computer Science Camp

Introduction to Game Programming With Alice

Description: During this one-week camp taught by faculty of the UAB Department of Computer and Information Sciences, students will learn common programming constructs, basic algorithm design and storyboarding of movies and games. Students will learn to use Alice, a 3D-programming environment. Projects will involve the creation of video games and movies. The camp is for rising seventh- through ninth-graders. Students should have basic computer usage skills such as using a mouse in Windows Explorer. The cost is $250 and includes lunch. Registration deadline is May 1. High School Computer Science Camps

Description: The UAB Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers a series of summer camps that introduce high school students to various topics in computing. The camps provide opportunities for students to learn about programming in Java, robotics and computer graphics. Students may enroll for the complete three-week term or select individual topics, but there are prerequisites for the second and third weeks. Camps are taught by UAB faculty. The camps are for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Tuition for each week is $200 or $500 for all three weeks. One merit-based scholarship, supported by Cardinal Health – MedMined, to cover camp tuition is available, as well as several needs-based scholarships, supported by the National Science Foundation. UAB High School Programming Contest

Description: The UAB High School Programming Contest (HSPC) brings talented students from high schools throughout Alabama to the UAB campus to participate in an organized competition. Students individually compete to demonstrate their programming skills and problem solving abilities by attempting to solve six programming problems within a three-hour period. Schools that have more than three contestants are also eligible for team awards. Approximately $7,000 in prizes , supported by Cardinal Health - MedMined, CTS, Pearson Education, Dell and Microsoft, will be awarded. To register, call or visit the Web site.

 

UAB Alice Film Festival

Description: The UAB Alice Film Festival provides an opportunity for Alabama K-12 students to create animated movies using Alice and submit them to a competition.
