More than just a major city for business and industry, Birmingham is also a center for the performing, visual, and even culinary arts.
- The Birmingham Museum of Art houses more than 22,000 pieces from European, American, Asian, African, Pre-Colombian, and Native American cultures, as well as from local artists. The museum also offers concerts, lectures, films, and special events, as well as gallery tours and art classes, to enhance the appreciation of art and the museum experience.
- UAB’s Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center is home to the performing arts in Birmingham. With four venues ranging from the 1,330-seat Jemison Concert Hall to the black-box Odess Theatre, the Alys Stephens Center and the Alabama Symphony offer over 300 events every year in music, dance, theatre, and more, including educational programs for children and adults.
- The Alabama Ballet brings classical and contemporary ballet to Birmingham through its performances, dance education, and community outreach. A nationally prominent company, the Alabama Ballet is one of six in the world permitted by the Balanchine Trust to perform Balanchine’s Nutcracker. Dancers of all ages and skill levels can find suitable classes in ballet, jazz, modern dance, and even Pilates at the Alabama Ballet School of Dance.
- For more than 70 years, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has served Alabama, providing quality performances of varying styles of music and presenting some of the finest guest performers of the day. The outstanding musicians of the ASO bring to life some of the world’s most treasured musical masterpieces and, through education and outreach programs, introduce listeners to exciting new works and composers. The ASO enriches the cultural fabric of the community with its classical concerts, its Young People’s Concerts, its Community Outreach Program, and by performing with productions by the Alabama Ballet and Opera Birmingham.
- UAB students and faculty take the stage in professional-quality plays, one-acts, concerts, workshops, and more through the UAB departments of theatre and music. Designed by students and supervised by the many professional performers on UAB’s faculty, these performances entertain everywhere from the stage to the concert hall to the football field—and provide educational opportunities for performance-minded high school students.
- Nationally celebrated chef Frank Stitt adds a Southern accent to European sophistication with Highlands Bar and Grill, recently named the fifth best restaurant in the entire country by Gourmet magazine. Stitt is one of many independent restaurateurs whose contributions to the Birmingham culinary scene have brought the city international recognition for fine dining.
- For more than 50 years, the Birmingham Children's Theatre has been entertaining children with quality, professional theatre productions. Study guides are provided to coordinate productions with school curricula, and workshops in dramatics and theatre performance give children the opportunity to try out the stage for themselves.
