Brief Bio

Dr. Gang Liu completed his degree in Dental Medicine at China Medical University in 1994 and his PhD in Oral Biology at Wuhan University in 1999. He moved to the United States and in 2001 completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics at the Medical College of Georgia.  Following completion of his fellowship, he came to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2001 and completed a second fellowship in the Dept of Cell Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Xinbin Chen. He spent the next 3 years in the Dept of Cell Biology as a research associate.  In 2006, Dr. Liu was appointed to the faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Medicine.

 

Research Interests

Dr. Liu's research focuses on the roles of microRNAs in pulmonary inflammation, hypertension, and fibrosis. The goals are:  to identify specific microRNAs that are involved in these pulmonary diseases; to determine the mechanisms by which specific microRNAs regulate the pathogenesis and progression of these diseases; and to explore the therapeutic potentials of specific microRNAs in treating pulmonary diseases.
