Joseph R. Deatherage, D.M.D., M.D.
OFS: DeatherageDr. Deatherage is an associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Deatherage earned his DMD at the UAB School of Dentistry in 1987. While a dental student and later as a research fellow in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Deatherage conducted award winning and extensive research in the correction of dentofacial bony defects. Dr. Deatherage earned his MD at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1992 with multiple academic honors.

Dr. Deatherage completed his internship in general surgery and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas in 1994. He became board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1997.

After completion of his surgical training, Dr. Deatherage was in the private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas for 12 years. His clinical interests in private practice included the full scope of the specialty with emphasis in dental implants, craniofacial bony reconstruction, and corrective jaw surgery. While in Arkansas, Dr. Deatherage was appointed by the governor of that state to the Arkansas State Dental Board. He served as president of that board in 2003-2004. Dr. Deatherage is a member of many dental and medical organizations. He has held multiple leadership positions in those organizations.

Dr. Deatherage has many recreational interests including flying and outdoor adventure travel. He is an accomplished fresh and salt water fly-fisherman and has pursued this interest throughout the globe. Dr. Deatherage has returned home to Birmingham with his wife and two sons to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery within the UAB organization.
