Interviewing Process

Once the Program Director and Coordinator review applications, a letter of invitation will be sent to applicants considered strong candidates for the UAB Neurology Residency Training Program and the Program Coordinator will schedule and arrange interviews with each applicant.

Candidates invited for interviews are chosen based upon a number of factors including USMLE scores, academic credentials, personal statement, letters of recommendation, etc. If applicants are foreign medical graduates, we encourage you to have had some US clinical training (observership, externship, etc.) and research experience.

We have a two-day interview process that will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday. If possible, selected applicants should arrive on Monday evening for the interview. Many neurology residency training programs have a one-day interview that is very rushed. This does not allow applicants to see a program "as is". We feel that a two-day interview is necessary for applicants to have adequate time to meet all of the residents and many of the faculty, and attend morning report, noon conference, professor's rounds, and grand rounds.

To help defray some of the costs incurred during the applicant’s interviews, we will pay for hotel accommodations for two nights at the Courtyard by Marriott - Birmingham. The Program Coordinator will make the arrangements and reservations for the chosen applicants.

On Tuesday, you will meet with the Chairman of the Department, attend grand rounds, take a tour of Birmingham, and have dinner with the residents. On Wednesday morning, your interview will begin with morning report, touring of the UAB hospital facilities, and meeting with members of the neurology faculty and residents. You will also meet with a member of the Internal Medicine Program. Selected applicant's itinerary will be mailed to them to the address listed on the ERAS application one week before the interview.
