The IRRF Board of Directors
The members of the IRRF Board of Directors serve in a voluntary capacity, receiving no salary for their time and efforts to insure that quality ophthalmic research is being supported, while at the same time guarding the endowment with which they have been entrusted. Members are re-elected annually. While the day-to-day administrative duties of the Foundation are performed by a full-time Executive Director, board directors oversee all aspects of the grant approval process, fund raising efforts, and financial investment strategies.
The initial IRRF board in 1997 was made up of five dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to establish a foundation to support scientific research to discover the causes, preventions, and cures of macular degeneration, as well as other degenerative diseases of the retina. As the founding member, Alston Callahan, M.D. was elected President. Charles D. Kelman, M.D., who discovered and developed the small incision cataract operation that has had a tremendous impact on the improvement of eye care, was elected as Vice President. Michael A. Callahan, M.D., well-known Birmingham, Alabama ophthalmologist with more than 27 years of clinical experience, served as Secretary. Until her death in 1999, Mrs. Loris Rich, a macular degeneration sufferer, served as Treasurer. Mr. Daniel H. Markstein III, a partner with a leading Southeastern law firm, provided invaluable support as Counsel.
