About the International Retinal Research Foundation
The International Retinal Research Foundation, Inc. (IRRF) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to its mission of supporting visual research. Emphasis is placed on diseases of all structures of the human eye with a focus on discovering the causes, preventions, and cures of macular degeneration of the retina and diabetic retinopathy. To accomplish this mission, the IRRF provides financial support of vision research directly, as well as through salary support for training fellowships, public awareness programs, and the promotion of the exchange of research findings.

During the first year of the Foundation's existence, nearly $1 million was received in financial support and shortly afterwards the first grant was made. Several generous legacies followed, with the most notable being from Loris and David Rich. Now, in 2005 the IRRF capital funds total approximately $28 million. Since incorporating in 1997, the IRRF board of directors has awarded over $3 million to retinal researchers worldwide.

The administrative offices for the IRRF are located at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. The Hospital and the IRRF share a common bond in that both entities were founded by Alston Callahan, M.D. with help from private citizens, public corporations, and grateful patients.
