About the Collaborators
NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON AGING, NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the US Department of Health and Human Services, leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. In 1974 Congress granted authority to establish NIA to provide leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination and other programs relevant to aging and older people. Subsequently, the Institute was designated as the primary federal agency for Alzheimer’s disease research.
The NIA supports the Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center. This service offers information and publications on diagnosis, treatment, patient care, caregiver needs, long-term care, education and training, and research related to Alzheimer’s disease. Staff members answer telephone, e-mail and written requests, and make referrals to local and national resources. The ADEAR website offers free, online publications in English and Spanish; e-mail alerts and an online Alzheimer’s-focused newsletter; an AD clinical trials database listing studies seeking the public’s participation; the AD Library database; a listing of the NIA’s Alzheimer’s Disease Centers around the United States; and more.
Dr. Richard J. Hodes, MD, Director of the National Institute on Aging
Marcelle Morrison-Bogorad, PhD, directs the Institute’s Division of Neuroscience, which provided technical advice on the films, and whose portfolio of basic, translational and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease is featured throughout the films.
