University Honors Program Scholarships

The University Honors Program administers a small number of scholarships for which incoming and current students are eligible.  Students can apply for a number of one-year scholarships listed below.  These are distributed based on need and merit. Applications are due by May 1 and scholarships are awarded by mid-May for the following academic year. Application forms are available from the Director, Dr. Mike Sloane (email: sloane@uab.edu).

  • Three Hess-Abroms scholarships are awarded annually and are currently valued at $24,000, providing $6,000 per year for four years. All students applying for the University Honors Program are eligible and encouraged to apply for a Hess-Abroms Scholarship. The Hess-Abroms Scholarship may be added to other scholarships offered by UAB or external sources.  There is a brief application form that can be obtained during your January interview. The Honors Council selects Hess-Abroms scholarship awardees at the same meeting where applicants are selected for the entry into the program. Notification of award accompanies the letter of offer for entry into the program.
  • Five to eight Virginia B. and William M. Spencer III scholarships valued between $1,000 to $2,000 each are awarded annually to students entering or currently in the UAB Honors Program on the basis of merit and need.
  • One Rushton/Alabama Power scholarship valued at $1,600 is awarded on the basis of merit and need.
  • One Richard Crittenden Honors scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the UAB University Honors Program. This $1,500 scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and need.
  • Three Juliet Nunn-Pearson scholarships valued at $1,000 each available for incoming freshman only.
  • One Steven C. Smith Discovery Award of $1,000 is awarded on the basis of merit and need.

UAB Scholarships

Most University Honors Program students receive scholarship support through the UAB Admissions Office.  For more complete information concerning UAB scholarships, click here: UAB Scholarships

New freshmen are automatically considered for all university-wide academic scholarships once they are accepted to UAB. Merit scholarships are awarded on a first come-first served basis to eligible entering freshmen. Students who wish to be considered for merit scholarships should postmark the undergraduate application and all supporting credentials (official transcript and official ACT and/or SAT scores) no later than December 1 of the senior year.  Admission applications completed after December 1 of the senior year will be considered on a funds-available basis only.
