Computer and Information Sciences (B.S.)
Majors in Computer and Information Sciences (CS) - Pre-Health: Students wishing to enter the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, or Optometry after completing their undergraduate degree in computer science should complete the following sequence of courses in chemistry, biology, and physics: CH 115, 116, 117, 118, 235, 236, 237, and 238; BY 123 and 124; PH 201 and 202 or PH 221 and 222. These courses should be completed prior to taking the MCAT examination at the end of the junior year. Students can also obtain advanced degrees in bioinformatics.
Honors Program in Computer and Information Sciences - purpose: The Computer and Information Sciences Honors Program offers outstanding, highly motivated students the opportunity to develop research skills in preparation for graduate work or a professional career. http://www.cis.uab.edu.
Physics with Biophysics Concentration (B.S.)
The Department of Physics offers courses in astronomy, physical science, and physics for non-majors; several undergraduate program options, including a Physics Education Track and a Biophysics Track for physics majors planning an interdisciplinary career; and graduate programs. Students considering a physics major or minor are encouraged to contact the department for current information about career opportunities and planning.
Biophysics Track Requirements: This interdisciplinary track of the physics major is designed to place students in medical school, graduate school in biophysics or other biosciences, teaching positions, high-tech enterprises, or science writing. http://www.phy.uab.edu/#
Honors Program in Physics - purpose: The Physics Honors Program offers the motivated and capable physics major enhanced opportunities to develop the research, problem solving, and communication skills necessary for a dedicated effort in the scientific enterprise. By designing, describing, and defending a research project, the honors graduate will have a documented capacity for success in graduate school or in any career where scientific critical thinking, motivation, and accomplishment are valued.
Social and Behavioral Sciences
Gerontology - Minor and Parallel Certificate
UAB's Gerontology Education Program offers interdisciplinary courses in gerontology leading to an undergraduate minor and parallel certificate. It provides students a thorough background in existing theory and research in gerontology and supplements their existing backgrounds and professional disciplines. http://www.catalog.uab.edu/sbs.pdf
Medical Sociology - Minor
The Department of Sociology offers a minor in Medical Sociology available to all undergraduates at UAB. The program provides a variety of courses in health related sociology dealing with the social causes and consequences of disease and health disparities by gender, race, ethnicity, class and age. The minor is particularly valuable to pre-health students preparing for professional training in Medicine, Optometry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and other health related professions. http://www.sbs.uab.edu/Depts/Soc/MinorinMedicalSociology.htm
Sport and Health in Society - Major
The Sport and Health in Society Individually Designed Major is intended for students who might pursue medical school toward a career in orthopedics or sport medicine, careers in the health and fitness industry including parks and recreation management, health and fitness retail outlets, physical therapy, college and professional athletics operations, and sports related legal careers among others. Depending upon the students goals, minors in business, public administration, health promotion and education, psychology, or the pre-med sequence would be recommended, but a minor is not required. http://www.uab.edu/sbs/component/content/article/181-interdisciplinary-programshome/626-sport-and-health-in-society
