Helpful Hints and Suggestions

Presentation Examples

POSTERS: Most posters can be made using a single slide layout on PowerPoint.  Simply open a new/blank presentation, and use the “Page Setup” option in the File Menu to change the height and the width of the slide to the specifications you want for your poster.  Now, you can begin planning and putting together your presentation.  It is best to start with a template first, and plan which color texts will be most easily readable with this template.  From here, you can create textboxes, insert images, and import graphs to create your poster.  It is strongly recommended that students plan what they would like their poster to look like before beginning.  This includes coming up with a rough format for text and picture placement before actually getting on the computer.  This plan can aid the student in creating a poster that effectively conveys the project’s overall message.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS AND POWERPOINTS: All oral presentations should include a PowerPoint or some sort of electronic visual aid that will assist the student in explaining his project.  When using PowerPoint, students should take care not to use long, complex sentences on slides.  Students should not simply paste paragraphs of information from a research paper or abstract.  It is recommended that students summarize their results, and include on the PowerPoint slides only subject headings/titles/brief bullets/notes to help make major points.  It is suggested that students use graphs and images and discuss specific uses and general integrity or purpose of the project.
