Norma-May Isakow, Director
Norma-May graduated from law school in South Africa where she practiced law, taught at the University of Cape Town, and supervised student legal aid clinics. She received an LLM degree from the London School of Economics and is admitted to the California and Colorado Bars. As Senior Research Assistant to a U.S. federal judge, she created a judicial internship program for law students. Before coming to UAB, Norma-May was Director of Public Interest and adjunct faculty at the University of Denver College of Law where she created, taught and coordinated a Public Interest Practicum program.
In 2007, Norma-May was appointed as Director of UAB's new Office for Service Learning, merging her experience in community-based education with her enthusiasm for working with students. In this capacity, Norma-May has built up resources for service learning for Faculty, Students and Community Partners. She assists faculty through workshops and one-on-one consultation to integrate service learning into classroom curricula and has created and implemented UAB's rubric-system for Service-Learning Course Designation. She cultivates, strengthens, and nurtures UAB's relationships with community partners and works with faculty and students to find suitable opportunities for meaningful engagement. Norma-May also teaches service-learning courses that incorporate meaningful service with community partners, enhanced academic learning and purposeful civic learning.
During her tenure as Director of the Office for Service Learning, UAB has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to America’s communities. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. UAB was also recognized with the 2008 Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The designation recognizes UAB's community engagement across its curricula and its outreach and partnerships with the community. UAB is one of only a select few universities nationally that appears in both the Community Engagement Classification and the Carnegie Research Extensive classification.
