Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM)

The SEM initiative seeks to ensure that UAB recruits a diverse, well-prepared, student body that matches the academic opportunities available; and to foster student engagement and success, ensuring retention and timely graduation, through integrative partnerships across the university and community for the benefit of students, the institution, and society.

Three-Tiered Organization

Steering Committee

Members: President, Provost, relevant VPs, Deans with undergraduate programs, and Faculty Senate rep.

Roles:

• To articulate the mission, vision, and goals;
• To empower the Planning Group to formulate plans to achieve the goals (which are then implemented by work groups);
• To fund SEM initiatives where appropriate;

• To oversee the SEM organization and receive and discuss results.

Planning Group

Members: Associate Provosts, AVPs in Student Affairs, Associate Deans with undergraduate programs, certain Directors in Undergraduate Programs and Enrolment Management, and Faculty Senate rep.

Roles:

• To produce broad plans to achieve the strategic goals set by the Steering Committee;
• To seek funding from the Steering Committee where appropriate;
• To establish and empower Work Groups to define the plans in more detail and implement initiatives;

• To receive reports from the Work Groups, and in turn report to the Steering Committee.

Work Groups

Examples of foci: supportive campus environment; advising and technology; student success programs and retention; student diversity; international student recruitment.

Members: 6-10 from multiple VP lines

Roles:

• To refine plans from Planning Group
• To implement plans and measure outcomes
• To report back to the Planning Group
