Eligibility for Optional Enrollment in the Student Health Service
All registered undergraduate students taking a minimum of six credit hours and all graduate students taking a minimum of five hours are eligible to enroll in the Student Health Services optional plan.
Enrollment in the optional plan requires (1.) payment of the SHS per semester fee for primary care services delivered at the SHS clinic on campus and (2.) a form of major medical insurance coverage for hospital/ emergency/ specialty care and lab/xray services..
UAB offers a special student-oriented major medical insurance plan through VIVA for those students not already covered by a comparable plan.
