The University of Alabama at Birmingham in partnership with Alabama's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) sponsors an undergraduate summer enrichment program to increase the number of competent, well trained minority researchers and health care professionals working on health disparities in the Deep South.
Program Eligibility:
MHRC is a highly competitive program that helps students prepare for and gain enrollment into graduate or professional schools. Undergraduate students applying to MHRC must be willing to spend three consecutive summers in the program. MHRC scholars apply for year one of the program, and they complete two additional consecutive summers for a total of three summers.
Eligibility--Year One (4 weeks):
- Must be a college freshman with an interest in a health career
- Must be enrolled in one of the following institutions – UAB, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Miles, Oakwood, Stillman or Tuskegee
- Must be willing to spend three consecutive summers in MHRC
- Have at least a 3.00 grade point average on a 4.00 scale
- Complete the MHRC application
- Submit High School and College transcripts
- Submit two recommendations forms (one form must be from an instructor)
Eligibility--Year Two (6 weeks):
- Must have successfully completed Year One of MHRC
- Have maintained at least a 3.00 grade point average on a 4.00 scale
- Maintained an interest in a Health Career
Eligibility—Year Three (8 weeks):
- Must have successfully completed Year Two of MHRC
- Have maintained at least a 3.00 grade point average on a 4.00 scale
- Maintained an interest in a Health Career
Program Benefits:
Scholars will receive the following program benefits each year.
- Increased admissibility into Health Career fields
- Intensive learning opportunities in health disparities research
- Stipends ($300 per week)
- On-campus Housing and Meal cards
- Program supplies –books, flash drives, etc.
- Tutoring during the academic year at home institution
- Advising in reference to Graduate School and/or Professional School preparation
- Networking with Admission counselors in Health Care Schools
- Students who successfully complete the three years of the program will receive additional incentives from the Health Care Schools. Incentives range from fee waivers to guaranteed interviews.

All eligible students are encouraged to apply. To be considered, a student's application packet must include:
- a completed MHRC application (pdf)
- official transcript(s) - high school and college
- two MHRC recommendation forms (pdf) - one must be from a faculty member
