Civic Engagement

Civic Engagement promotes civic responsibility, community engagement and self awareness through experiential learning opportunities.

Alternative Spring Break

During Spring Break, students have an opportunity to travel to surrounding communities in the southeastern region where there is a community need and volunteer. This gives participants a chance to participate in community service while learning the needs of various communities other than their own.

Summer Service Weekends

Twice during the Summer Semester, UAB students travel to a nearby community for a weekend of service. Destinations for these trips vary from year to year. There is no cost to students for participation.

Civic Engagement Fairs

Local community agencies come to campus to inform students about their non-profit agencies and recruit volunteers.

Leadership and Service Council

Members of Leadership and Service Council are responsible for coordinating various programs for the UAB student body. They create these programs and events within their committees.

There are five committees in LSC. They are:

  1. Into the Streets
This committee is in charge of our biannual community outreach day that allows from 500-1000 students to do community service in the Birmingham metro area for a day.

  2. Monthly Service
The Monthly Service Committee is responsible for coordinating monthly service projects in which UAB students participate.

  3. On-going Volunteer Service
This committee is responsible for coordinating all the continuous volunteer activities held throughout the year for UAB students.

  4. Retreats
This committee is responsible for coordinating our annual Fall Leadership Conference and our Winter Leadership Retreat.

  5. Social Change
The Social Change Committee is responsible for providing opportunities for awareness and action for the UAB campus to learn more about current issues and to act on creating change in the community.

In addition, several volunteer opportunities arise throughout the year, so continue to stop by Hill University Center Room 440 to find out how to serve the community.
