Student Leadership

Leadership Foundations

The UAB Leadership Foundations program is a four stage interactive program geared to any student wanting to sharpen his or her leadership skills and get the most out of what student life at UAB has to offer. It promotes effective communication, teambuilding, self-discovery, problem-solving and the ability to make informed, ethical decisions all of which will help students become responsible citizens in their communities, the nation, and the world.

Leadership Foundation Applications
To join this program is free to all students. Please complete an application which can be found in HUC 440. Applications will be available the first day of school. All students start in the Emerge stage of the program. If students feel they have a grasp of the basic concepts of leadership (the topics covered in the first level of the program) they may fill out the Leadership Foundations Intake Form. After being reviewed, the student will be notified on whether he or she will start in the Emerge or Achieve stage. Students cannot be placed into the Initiate stage.

The Leadership Foundations Phases

Emerge
In the first stage of the Leadership Foundations program we address the major topics under leadership such as group dynamics, leadership style, ethics, and consensus building. Through participation in this stage, students gain better insight on effective leadership as well as sharpen skills that will assist in becoming strong student leaders on campus and in their lives beyond UAB.
Achieve
The second stage will provide students an opportunity to learn practical skills that will be transferable to both their collegiate experience and their professional experience increasing their knowledge and understanding of the principles of communication, building their own and their organizations leadership brand, and the ability to motivate others. The Achieve level will prepare them to make the transition from student participant to student leader.
Initiate
In the third stage of the program students undergo a series of trainings that will aid in self discovery by participating in the StrengthsQuest program. Through this program each participant will get a full assessment of their strengths and learn to develop their leadership style based on those strengths. Once each person has an understanding of themselves, they will apply what they have learned through projects within the program and in the community.
Respond
In the final stage of the Leadership Foundations program students get a more advanced view of leadership and apply it by serving as a member of the steering committee for the Leadership Program. Through this level we reinforce lifelong leadership and train students so they may educate others. We also reference the book Good to Great by Jim Collins to gain a better view of leadership in a real world context.
