UAB‘s Cheerleading team cheers at home and away football games, men’s and women’s basketball games, and volleyball games. We also perform at many university and community appearances. Each summer we attend UCA camp and compete at UCA Nationals in January. The cheerleaders finished in the top 10 in 2009 in Small Coed Division 1 at the UCA College National Championships.

Breakdown of Scores

The score sheet will include separate scores for the following:

  • Overall Impression
  • Fight Song
  • Tumbling
  • Stunting

We will get these scores from 3 judges and then your Coach’s Evaluation and GPA scores will be calculated into the total.
The highest possible score would be 350pts (100pts per judge, 50 points for Coach’s evaluation and GPA).

Skills (100 pts per judge, 300 total points). Click here for a sample score sheet (PDF).

  • Tumbling - 30 pts
  • Fight Song - 30 pts
  • Stunting - 30 pts
  • Overall Appeal - 10 pts

Requested Skills

You will be asked to show your version of each of these, and judged upon difficulty level and execution of the skill. If you do not have the skill, you will be asked to show something similar. Just because you do not have a specified skill does not mean you will not make the team. Potential to learn the skill is also judged. These are NOT REQUIREMENTS. These are requested skills that we will ask to see at tryouts.

Tumbling:

  • Standing Tuck
  • Standing Back Handspring Back Tuck
  • Optional Standing Pass (ex 2 BHS to a tuck, 2 BHS to a Layout/Full)
  • Round off Back Handspring Back Tuck
  • 2 Optional Passes (ex Layout, Full, etc.)

Stunts:

(you may do each skill at your level from beginner to advanced, examples are next to each)

  • Toss to the top (ex Toss ext., toss QP, Full up, or Rewind, for multi base groups "quick toss")
  • Walk to the top (ex walk in liberty, walk in ext., multi base groups may do full ups here)
  • Full Down or Double Down (can be from any stunt)
  • Female Tops - must do a stretch
  • Males - must attempt any one arm stunt
  • Optional - no more than three transitions (4 total stunts)

***These are the standards in which we evaluate participants at tryouts, by no means must each participant have everything; we would like to see everyone show what they have to the best of their ability, and ATTEMPT all of the requested skills.

***You must tryout with students that are trying out at UAB. You may not bring in an outside person unless they are also trying out.
