Henry to run 500 miles to raise money to fight hunger
Joe Henry, a weight-room manager at the Campus Recreation Center, will run 500 miles from Washington, D.C., to the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, to raise awareness for Universities Fighting World Hunger — and to raise $100,000 for the United Nations World Food Programme.

Colin Davis wins ’10 Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction
Colin Davis, winner of the ’10 Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction, didn’t have the scholarly background many would assume. He completed school at age 15 and was a tool-and-die maker until age 22 when he quit his job and started studying to be accepted to university. His determination and drive have driven his success.

Biotechnology program attracts new talent
It’s a match made in UAB heaven. The biotechnology master’s program needed a faculty member with entrepreneurial skills and one who knew the nuanaces of the biotech industry. Kathy Nugent, a 20-year veteran of the biotech industry, wanted to bring her experiences to the classroom — so she accepted a full-time position here in November 2009.

Liber invited to observe fair and free election in Ukraine
George Liber, an expert in Ukranian history and politics, was part of a team of more than 600 election watchers organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to observe Ukraine’s 2010 presidential election. The group was invited to assess the fairness of the election.

Chronic-care doctors show off their vocal, acting chops
Sam Perna, Andy Duxbury and Ryan Nash are no strangers to opera or local theater. All three appeared in the Opera Birmingham production of Aida in January, as did their new “recruit,” Jim Raper. Duxbury says in medicine, it’s essential to understand your patients as people, not as a disease. He says acting and performing keep his mind sharp and help with his communication skills. His acting comrades agree.

Lorbeer joins LHL staff
Liz Lorbeer recently joined Lister Hill Library as the new associate director for content management, in which capacity she will oversee cataloging, serials, collection development and acquisitions at Lister Hill.
