Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. We provide a broad spectrum of psychiatric services in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry; Adult Psychiatry, including core areas such as Medical Surgical Psychiatry, Consultation/ER Psychiatry, and Neuropsychiatry Outpatient treatment; Geriatric Psychiatry; as well as a high quality Addiction Recovery Program. The Community Psychiatry Program (CPP) is a comprehensive community mental health center that serves as one of three catchment areas in Birmingham for the seriously mentally ill patient. Our services are provided by a multidisciplinary group of licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and clinical nurse specialists.
We also have a general residency program that offers a variety of clinical rotations, with closely supervised experiences in all major treatment modalities. The department has several fellowship programs, including Child/Adolescent Fellowship, Geriatric Fellowship, and Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship. Our graduate education provides a rich psychiatric teaching and elective rotations to third- and fourth-year medical students. Psychology training includes both internship and neuropsychology fellowship.
The Clinical research in the department includes projects in clinical psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and service psychiatry. The Behavioral Neurobiology division focuses on basic behavioral neurobiological researches, such as aging development, mechanisms of major psychiatric illnesses, and cognitive-behavioral research. PhD and postdoctoral research emphasizes training in the field of neuroscience, neurobiology, and neurobehavior.
