Personal:

Dr. Amos joined the faculty of UAB in 1972 following completion of his graduate studies in Vision Science at Indiana University. He was the founding Director of the Residency Programs at UABSO and served in that capacity until being named Chair of the Department of Optometry and Director of the Professional Program in 1994. He has served as Interim Dean and Dean of the School since 2000.

Dr. Amos served as a Captain in the US Air Force from 1966 to 1969. He provided eye care to active duty military personnel and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service as a result of his tour of duty in South Vietnam during that conflict. He has been selected as the "Optometrist of the Year" by the state, regional and national optometric associations. He was also the recipient of the "Distinguished Service Medal" by the American Optometric Association and elected as a "Distinguished Scholar of the National Academies of Practice.

Dr. Amos is the current President of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) and serves on numerous committees in professional organizations. He has published over 100 refereed articles and papers, two books and numerous book chapters.

He is married to Catherine S. Amos, O.D. and they have two children. He is a member of the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church and the Birmingham Downtown Rotary Club. He enjoys traveling, reading, golf (when he has a chance), and attending collegiate sporting events.
