How to Prepare for Your Eye Exam

The first part of the eye examination is the medical "case history." This is where the doctor or intern asks you questions about your general health as well as the health of your eyes. It is very helpful if you have a list of your current doctors, health problems and all the medications you are taking for your eyes and for your body. The medication list should include the name of the drug, the amount and how often you take it. For example, Relafen, 750 mg tablets, one per day. It is often helpful for the doctor if you bring the actual medicine bottles.

You should bring all glasses and contact lenses that you wear and copies of any eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions that you have from the last 1-2 years.

Be sure and bring your insurance card(s)!

If you need a referral from your primary doctor, you must obtain it before you can be examined or your insurance will not pay for the exam.
